Overview

KAUST PhD student, Ali Alibrahim, presented a poster at the 12th International Cretaceous Symposium in Leibniz University, Hannover, Germany from August 31 - September 5, 2025. The symposium takes place once every 4 years and covers the latest advances in Cretaceous geological research combining topics from sedimentology, paleontology and geochemistry. Ali presented a poster entitled “Micro-CT and Holographic Imaging of Late Cretaceous Benthic Foraminifera in Saudi Arabia” which was joint work with KVL on imaging and visualization of foraminifera samples.

KVL scientist Ronell Sicat developed the holographic visualization app that runs on the HoloLens 2. This app allows users to visualize 3D models of foraminifera as well as to intuitively interact, e.g., via slicing/clipping, with the data to reveal internal patterns that are typical of fossils.
