Overview

KAUST was recently awarded the 2024 ACM Gordon Bell Prize for Climate Modelling during the International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis (SC24) in Atlanta, Georgia. This prestigious award is given annually to top contributions in high-performance computing, particularly focused on climate modelling. The winning work is based on the paper: "Boosting Earth System Model Outputs And Saving PetaBytes in Their Storage Using Exascale Climate Emulators", which is a collaboration led by KAUST with partner institutions including Informational Science Lab, NSF National Center for Atmosphere Research US, NVIDIA, Saint Louis University, University of Notre Dame, and Lahore University of Management Sciences. A big part of the winning group is from KAUST, led by research scientist Sameh Abdulah, working with Prof. Marc Genton, Prof. David Keyes, research scientist Hatem Ltaief, Prof. Georgiy Stenchikov, Associate Prof. Ying Sun, and postdoc Yan Song. More details can be found in this official KAUST announcement.

Behind the scenes, this work was supported by the KAUST Supercomputing Core Lab, which provided supercomputing hardware and expertise. The KAUST Visualization Core Lab developed a holographic application that enabled the team to present their results using augmented reality during the live presentation at SC24, adding a wow-factor to the already impressive results.
