Overview
KVL collaborated with KAUST research scientist (now Aramco researcher) Dr. Viswasanthi Chandra and team on the semi-automatic hybrid segmentation and analysis of biogenic carbonate nodules collected from the Red Sea. KVL scientist Ronell Sicat performed the pre-processing, segmentation, and 3D analysis of uCT images of the nodules using a combination of Ilastik and Avizo. KVL also provided the powerful workstation that significantly sped up the process of segmentation and analysis of the nodule scans.
The research proposes a novel workflow for better, faster, and more accurate characterization and quantification of biogenic nodules towards a better understanding of their contribution to the Red Sea carbonate budget. The findings of this research have recently been published at the journal Geoscience Frontiers (journal impact factor 8.5) with the following details:

The work was done in collaboration with Dr. Viswasanthi Chandra (PSE, KAUST / Aramco), Dr. Valentina Bracchi (Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Milano-Bicocca, Milan, Italy), Prof. Francesca Benzoni (BESE, KAUST) and Prof. Volker Vahrenkamp (PSE, KAUST).
