Overview
At the 4th Workshop on Immersive Visualization Laboratories, held during the IEEE VR 2026 Conference, Staff Scientist Ronell Sicat presented an overview of the KAUST Visualization Core Lab (KVL) and shared recent success stories that demonstrate how immersive visualization can extend beyond traditional, laboratory‑bound settings.
As KVL transitions from a small number of large‑scale immersive systems toward a broader deployment of head‑mounted display (HMD)–based systems, the lab has adopted flexible frameworks that enable applications to be easily ported between CAVEs and HMDs, maximizing the strengths of both platforms. In parallel, KVL has evolved to provide AI expertise to its users, often uncovering unique research opportunities in immersive visualization projects rich in image data.
KVL continues to innovate in immersive storytelling and collaborates closely with domain scientists to create compelling research communication experiences that engage and benefit the broader community. While some of the lessons shared in this presentation may not be revolutionary, the goal is to highlight how KVL continuously learns, adapts, and innovates to remain relevant within a rapidly evolving research landscape—and to inspire other visualization laboratories to do the same.
