K2 Classes
Overview
We recently had the pleasure of hosting three K2 classes from The KAUST School (TKS). The visit provided a fun opportunity for the students to tour the Visualization Core Lab (KVL), see our facilities up close, and learn a little bit about how we help researchers visualize science.
Exploring the Showcase
The tour began in our main Showcase area, where the students gathered to watch large-scale visualizations on the Showcase Display Wall. We displayed a variety of colorful scientific models and high-resolution nature imagery, which sparked plenty of curiosity and questions from the group.
New AR/VR Space
A major highlight of the visit was introducing the students to our newly inaugurated AR/VR space. We have recently upgraded this section of the lab to include a suite of advanced tools designed for immersive analytics. The updated space is now equipped with:
- Multiple state-of-the-art AR/VR headsets
- Dedicated segmentation tablets
- High-end server workstations
While the segmentation tablets and workstations are used by our staff and users for processing large data sets, the students had a fantastic time exploring virtual reality. It was a great introduction to the technology in a fun, educational setting.
Immersive Displays
To round out the tour, the group visited our semi-immersive display space, CUBES, and viewed data on our 3D projector. Both systems utilized 3D glasses to make scientific data pop off the screen, giving the students a unique look at how we create immersive research environments.
Community Engagement
We always enjoy the chance to share our work with the wider KAUST community, especially the next generation of potential scientists. We look forward to hosting more TKS visits in the future!
